Labour says if elected, it will have all teenagers learning or earning within three years.

Currently nearly 60,000 young people are not in education, training or work, but leader Phil Goff says his party's youth skills and employment package will fix this.

And its main policy? Paying employers the equivalent of the dole for taking on apprentices.

Joining Firstline this morning was New Zealand Institute director Rick Boven.

I support it, since National have gone into power the number of jobs have decreased and tertiary education fees have increased ... Labour have always put the development of NZ youth high on their policy priority.

It should be made public just what these politicians are getting for free from the tax payer, everything and not just travel, who are the ones on a state paid benefit? its not so much those who are out of work getting approx $200pw to live on, its what it is costing nz tax payers through the nose to have these politicians living the high life and they have no qualms about sucking from the tax payer teat.
Have you seen any austerity measures announced by national that involve ministers loosing any tax payer paid extras,No and you wont either, politicians know when they are on to a good thing and if they stay there 9yrs, tax payers pay through the nose for the rest of the ex politicians life,go figure, this is an absoulute abuse of tax payers funds, add up how many politicians have left the beehive and add up what it is costing the tax payer,so when the focus is on beneficiaries ask just who are the beneficiaries here?
There are no jobs, there is no jobs policy only imaginary figures to fool NZ'ers as national has no idea of running a country, policies are introduced to cater to their mates and businesses partners.

Ahhh Clarke, another attack on others that do not agree with your benefit loving way of life?...methinks you are not the same person, but as Brent suggests...The Standard worker that passes the laptop around...afterall how can someone with so called pretend intellegence (you boast you have a dbl degree in economics...D'oh) not tackle the fact labour admitted they'd borrow more and indeed, with no policy...lol...what a tosser!

Clarke, you have proved my point with that rant. Seriously do you realize how bad it makes you look? You really do think that you are right and everyone else is wrong. Read the moderation guide, this is about people giving their opinions on an article which they should be allowed to do without being attacked by someone. I think TV3 should be censoring you for your reaction to others because quite frankly your attitude is really quite off putting and I don't particularly want to come on and read that sort of slander.

The youth are our future and deserve respect and a good future, how do you do it? you invest in them, policies that inhance their future whether it be work, learning or training,i am sure that the crime rate would lower, suicide would lower, drunkeness would lower, the community would benefit as a whole as our young would be more productive and happier and yes respectful.
The card system that national are going to implement is limp politics and falls into a casum of regurgitated muck,it would do nothing but show the youth that 'big daddy' doesn't trust you, which is exactly what the youth dont need right now.
Every intermediate student also needs to start to think about what they want to be as a profession or job and with that preparation a budgeting course should also be included
this would be a far better path for our youth futures than to step on them with a number 10 boot.

The right attack every single moment of the day.. so when the left fights back they bitch and moan like babies aye homer.. Go look at Mouthguards posts, go look at eddies posts.. neither of these people are nice guys. Mouthguard hates Maori, Hates women, Hates bveneficiaries and eddie is no better. I attack the low lifes on this site who spread hatred, they deserve no better than they give out themselves. I respect the opinions of others, but my opinion of bigots like Mouthguard and Eddie is that the deserve no better than they dish out. So go search through the site and look at their hatreds, the reason I dislike them so much is they have no clue what empathy or understanding is. It amazes me how quickly right wingers bitch about being attacked while they sit there attacking everyone themselves... Man up Homer, take a look at the people on this site and find out what they are like... Mouthguard is trash, as is katrina, Glenn, Chris, Eddie, Erm and others. The only thing they care about is themselves and they believe they have the god given right to tell everyone else how to run their lives. They are full of absolute hatred, theri parents raised them.. well if they had parents.. to be nothing but nasty individuals. The right are such cry babies.. its ok for them to call beneficiaries mongrels or bludgers, to call the sick and disabled a drain on society. The only people defending those I attack are people with no empathy, no conscience... no human understanding... just self involved pratts. I get angry at the amount of hatred that right wing parties are currently trying to preach... the down and out beneficiary bashing that is going on. At how people in poverty according to the drop kicks like katrina and mouthguard have no one but themselves to blame. Grow up Homer... or just go back to saying DOH!

Clarke, you are a very angry man, coming on here calling other people names and having a go at any post you don't like. People are entitled to their own opinions without slander from someone who thinks they are above everyone else. You need a life mate.

Things move in mysterious ways with this national government. To all you labour critics is there any one of you who can tell me who abolished the apprentiship schemes. Now who thinks its a great idea to reinstate them. National has spent over $200 million on youth in the last 3 years and acheived nothing. It should be more than obvious these torries are berreft of any ideas to help anybody other than there business mates.
