Today the owners of the Rena, the Greek shipping firm Costamere, apologised for this “disastrous event”.
But there is another party involved here too; the world's second largest container shipping company, Mediterranean Shipping.
It had chartered the vessel to ship containers from New Zealand to Singapore and on to other destinations.
Today its New Zealand general manager Phil Abraham spoke with our reporter Jendy Harper, who asked if his company feels any responsibility towards meeting some of the clean up costs.
