Prince William and Kate Middleton have been given the pop art treatment by one of the most respected living pop artists.

The newlyweds feature in a series of portraits by Miami-based Romero Britto, who showed them off to prospective buyers in London this week.

"I'm fascinated by the royal family and I did this portrait as homage to them," he told Reuters.

Kate and William appear in a similar pose to their official engagement portrait. However, in Britto's versions the couple are brightly coloured with hearts on their cheeks. A separate series entitled 'Our Princess' only features Kate.

Two portraits of William's grandmother, the Queen, are also for sale. The collection also includes paintings of Madonna, Jesus Christ, Mickey Mouse and the Pope.

Self-taught Britto was born in Brazil in 1963 and began his career painting on newspapers. His distinctive style combining cubism with pop has made him one of the most revered pop artists in the world
