New Zealand Olympic runner Nick Willis believes his performance in the 1500m final was a result of his failure to recover from earlier races.
Although he started strong, Willis finished in ninth place after fading in the last few hundred metres.
In a tweet this afternoon, Willis dismissed claims that his race strategy failed him in the pursuit of a medal.
“On reflection my poor performance wasn't likely a miss-timed peak, but inability to recover from rounds. How to fix that is the Q,” he wrote.
Former Olympian Sir John Walker has criticised Willis, saying he should have won the race and underperformed on the day.
Willis says he is now considering his next steps.
“Will take a few days away from running and support the remaining @nzolympics competitors, then decide what GP races I'll do,” he wrote on Twitter.
