Police were called to Mt Eden prison overnight after a reinforced window near the prison's control room was broken.
They noticed the broken window about 2am, and police say they believe a rock may have been used to break it.
A large police presence was reported around the prison to ensure nobody was trying to break in or out.
Police are yet to locate the person who broke the window.
