A gay woman says she was kicked out of a Wellington bar on the weekend after she kissed her girlfriend.

Rebekah Galbraith, in a public post on her Facebook page, said a staff member asked the couple to leave Public, a bar on Courtenay Pl, at around 2:50am.

Ms Galbraith said the staff member didn't hide the reason why they were kicked out.

"When we asked why we had to leave, no reason was given, just the repeated command; 'you need to leave, both of you now'," she wrote.

Once outside, she says she accused him of kicking them out because they were gay.

"He agreed, and shrugged, and said 'it's not my place', and with a smirk, claimed he 'wished it could be different'," she wrote.

"So make it different. How dare you make us feel marginalised in a bar, somewhere we consider to be open and accepting."

Ms Galbraith says they were not intoxicated or causing trouble.

She will be making a complaint to the Human Rights Commission.

Public management is yet to make a statement on the matter, though a comment on Ms Galbraith's Facebook post, purporting to be from the owner of the bar, says they "couldn’t give a shit" if they were gay.

"I am disappointed that I have to defend my business and myself as being owner of Public on Facebook...I am the last person to be homophobic, not only do I have a niece and a sister who are gay I also have staff working for me who are gay ...whether your [sic] gay straight black or white or otherwise I couldn't give a s**t...what I do care about is you slagging off my business."

It is not clear if the comment was genuinely from the owner of the bar or not.

Several people this afternoon have left comments on the bar's Facebook page.

"You're going to have a very bad reputation after this," wrote Doug Menzies. "Quite hilarious though, considering your bars name (sic)."

"I think you'll find that Wellington will let you know that this sort of descrimination won't stand (sic)," wrote Tim Sutton.
