British animal cruelty inspectors say they have tracked down a woman caught on closed-circuit TV tossing a cat into a rubbish bin.
Video footage captured by the cat owner's personal surveillance camera - and seen by thousands after it was posted online - shows a woman stroking four-year-old Lola before grabbing the pet by the neck and dumping it into the nearby wheelie bin in the Stoke area of Coventry in central England.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), which investigates and prosecutes cruelty cases, said Tuesday it has identified the woman and plans to interview her.
Police said they are aiding the inquiry.
According to Lola's owners, Darryl and Stephanie Mann, the cat spent 15 hours inside the bin before she was rescued.
Darryl Mann said his pet had been scared but unharmed, and said he was pleased that the woman had been tracked down.
"Hopefully the police and the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) will sort it out now," he said as he stroked rescue cat Lola.
Footage of the incident posted on social networking site Facebook received a vitriolic reaction.
Hundreds of groups have emerged on the website featuring threatening messages aimed at the woman seen in the CCTV video.
According to Sky News, some of the comments were so extreme that police on Tuesday asked Mann to close the site.
The RSPCA said that the woman had been identified, but declined to say whether she had been tracked down by a viewer who had seen the footage online.
The animal welfare charity said they were conducting their investigation in conjunction with the police, and urged the public to leave the matter to the authorities.
