Police have charged a 64-year-old man with murder after the death of a woman in Tauranga today.

The man will appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow morning.

The body of the woman was found around 2pm after a member of the public alerted police to a dispute between a man and a woman outside a residential address in Bell Street, Judea.

When police arrived on the scene they found the woman’s body on the driveway of the property.

Previous reports suggest the woman was stabbed to death but police say it is too early to confirm the cause.

“The investigation is in its very early stages, the scene is still to be examined and a post mortem will need to be held,” says Detective Sergeant Greg Turner.

“It would be wrong of me to speculate about the cause of death this early in the piece."

Police believe they know the identity of the woman but will not release any information until next of kin have been notified.

The scene has been cordoned off and a detailed examination will take place tomorrow.
