Women's Refuge has done an about-turn, and is setting up a safehouse for men.

The centre will open in Gisborne in the New Year, and is a joint initiative with Men Against Violence Group - Tai Rawhiti - and the refuge centre, which has already signed the tenancy agreement papers.

Tai Rawhiti spokesperson, Tim Marshall, says up to four men at a time will be able to stay at the house run by males.

The house is the first of its kind in New Zealand.
