In Sydney, a toddler left by his mother in a car with the windows up had to be freed by a man with a hammer, who realised the child was cooking in the heat.

The temperature continued to rise when the mother returned and was confronted by the rescuers.

Residents Pete Cassidy and Colin Grinyer saw the 18-month-old boy trapped in the car – sweltering in the heat.

Mr Cassidy freed the boy by smashing the window and gave him water to cool down.

Paramedics were called to the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Poor kid. No excuse, mother. I hear all these excuses for this sort of thing, but I don't buy it.

Im 18 and not a mother but gosh what a bad mistake. According to Australian news the woman had no idea the boy was still in the car because she had dropped her other four little ones at home and then came shopping thinking she had dropped all five of her children home. Close friends said that she is a very good mother. I really feel for her though. I'm sure the mother is feeling very guilty after that heated confrontation in the shop but seriously, how can you NOT realise your child was still in the car? Cmon man it's not an excuse but a careless mistake and failure. It doesnt matter whether you're a good full-time mum but one fatal mistake like that should not be lightly considered upon and from then her reputation fades. That boy was near death because of one stupid mistake. It's best if all mothers just check everything in case they forget something. Taking care of kids is a lifelong committed sacrifice and investment not a temporary drop off, gone, done, off to shop job. Sheesh.

She obviously hadn't watched Oprah, Oprah interviewed a women that left her child in the car all day (she was under alot of stress) but still it sticks in my mind and that was the whole point of the show. I think she should get charged!! Horrid women there is no excuse!

Well done to the men that rescued that poor wee boy, thats totally disgusting & mothers like this one don't deserve to have children, all in the name of the silly season....lets hope & pray that this little boy doesn't grow up with nightmares of this situation..

This story is really sad! You here of so many children been left in the car while there parents are shopping! and it never turns out good! Parents have got to relise that it is dangraous to leave there child in the car not only in hot tempeture but by themselves with nobody watch them.... They will wake up and relise they are by them selves... Im not a mother yet... but I know that Im not that stupid! I dont even leave my puppy in the car by herself just to go shopping.I hope and pray the mother will learn from this!!!
