Haiti has been shaken by the largest earthquake ever recorded in the area.

It had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centred about 15km west of Port-au-Prince at a depth of 8km, the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake's size and proximity to populated Port-Au-Prince will likely result in mass casualties and structural damage.

Images of the widespread destruction are appearing on Twitter and Facebook - 3 News is documenting them here.

It is truly devastating to hear of this disaster in Haiti and it breaks my heart to see so many people suffering.I have just watched the news to find that a family I recognise is also involved and this upsets me deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with all affected

This is another example of why the world has to work hand in hand, to help the people of this country. I have whitness first hand the disaster of 911, and we will have more. Lets unite and pour our efforts to the people of Haiti who desperatly need relief and money to care for the injured and help rebuild.
