A nine-year-old Chinese girl has become one of the world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a healthy boy.
According to a Chinese newspaper, the unnamed girl was brought to a hospital in Changchun when she was eight and a half months pregnant. She gave birth to the baby by Caesarean section two days later.
The police are now working to establish who fathered the baby after the girl’s parents confirmed the pregnancy.
Sex with a child under the age of 14 in the province results an automatic rape conviction and a lengthy jail sentence.
The youngest mother in the world is believed to be five-year-old Lina Medina of Peru. She gave birth to a son named Gerardo by Caesarean section in 1939.
Several other nine-year-old girls have also given birth in Thailand, Singapore, Rwanda and Brazil.
