A Japanese harpoon ship rammed the anti-whaling vessel Bob Parker in Australian Antarctic Territory this afternoon, its owner Sea Shepherd said tonight.

No one was injured in the incident at 4.09pm NZT about 180 miles off Cape Darnley, the Sea Shepherd group said in a statement.

The organisation claimed the Yushin Maru 3 "intentionally" rammed the Bob Barker, penetrating its hull and endangering the lives of crew.

The anti-whaling craft had been actively blocking the slipway of the Nisshin Maru, the Japanese whaling fleet's factory ship when the collision occurred.

"Four harpoon ships, the Yushin Maru 1, 2, and 3 and Shonan Maru 2, were circling and making near passes to the stern and bow of the Bob Parker," Sea Shepherd said.

The Bob Barker did not move and the Yushin Maru 3 then rammed it, creating a metre-long deep gash in the ship's mid starboard side above the waterline.

The Bob Barker continues to block the mother ship' slipway preventing the transfer of dead whales and effectively shutting down whaling operations.

Sea Shepherd said the incident demonstrated a continued escalation of violence by the whalers in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.

The group quoted Paul Watson, skipper of the Steve Irwin, currently en route to join the action, as saying the whalers got away scot-free with the "outrageous" recent sinking of the Ady Gil and now apparently thought they could do whatever they want.

"They appear to have no qualms about endangering Sea Shepherd crew. What we really need is for the governments of Australia and New Zealand to step up and start enforcing maritime laws in these waters, or who know what the whalers will do next. Australian and New Zealand lives are at risk every day in these waters."

The crew of the Bob Barker reported the Yushin Maru 3 stopped after the impact, and added it was possible she was damaged.

If Sea Shepherd desires to protect something and unnecessarily put themselves in harm's way, maybe they should try to protect the ships being captured by Somali pirates on the other side of the world.

Ha, take off your blinkers, all maritime experts and lawyers shown the footage have openly stated the Andy Gil was to blame. The footage clearly shows their forward speed just before the collision. And other footage proves their claims of being low on fuel was a lie.

Take off the blinkers Alien. The three angles the last collision were shot at clearly showed the Japanese deliberately rammed the Ady Gil, which was trying to get out of the way.

deane, I suggest you view stories without your typical political bs biased. All experts who have video the footage agree that the Japanese did not ram the boat last time, that boat crossed in front of the Japanese boat. It has also been shown they had lied constantly about how much fuel was really on board the boat. As for what the government is doing, let's see they have the correct departments investigating the incident, and are in talks with a number of countries to ban whaling from the area. A lot more than the previous government who did nothing on the issue for 9 years.

The Japanese are acting like bully's. Little wonder when our foreign affairs minister accuses the victim of the last attack and lets the criminal off.

Clearly money talks and it seems that this government like other nations are turning their backs to the wall, not only with regards to whaling, but blatant disregard to maritime law.

Our government politicians are gutless wonders.

Sea Shepard are known liars, they twist the story around to make themselves the victims when they are the ones throwing acid at people and using their can opener on boats.

If Australian and New Zealand lives are at risk Sea Shepard should not be there, why risk your own life for a whale, The Governments cannot enforce maritime law as the japanese are breaking no laws.
Sea sheperd are the agitators here they should be removed from the situation before serious injury or death occur.
