At least eight people are dead and 40 others injured by avalanches in a mountain pass north of Kabul that have left hundreds stranded on the roads.
Gen Abdul Rahman Sayedkhail, Parwan provincial police chief, said eight people have been killed, while more than 40 other civilians were injured by avalanches in the Salang Pass, which crests at 3,800m.
He said rescue operations started Monday afternoon. The avalanches occurred after heavy snows fell in the area Monday. The road through the pass connects Kabul with the northern city of
Mazar-i-Sharif.
Defence Ministry spokesman Gen Mohammad Zahir Azimi said several Afghan Army units has been mobilized in the rescue effort.
