A leading international security analyst believes New Zealand sportspeople competing in India will be an unlikely terrorism target.

Al Qaeda is warning the international community not to send athletes to any events in India including the Commonwealth Games.

New Zealand shooting and hockey teams will shortly be playing in the region.

AKE security expert, Fraser Bombford, says when looking at the terrorism risk you examine the political connections.

“An Indian side, or potentially an English or even an American sports team, might be considered a more high-risk threat then New Zealand is.

He says New Zealand have very little connection to the issues that fundamentalist Islamics are fighting for.

The Black Sticks are still going to next week's World Cup, and our six cricketers in the IPL are at this stage heading to the competition in April.
