A New South Wales surfer has told of his remarkable escape from a terrifying close encounter with a three-metre shark.

On Father's Day, 51-year old John Morgan was trying his new paddleboard when he was nudged by a large shark off Clarkes Beach in Byron Bay.

The shark was startled and took off, dragging John with it for 40 metres.

Eventually the shark untangled itself and swam away.

Lifeguards say it is normal to see more shark sightings during spring. They are attracted to the whales migrating south with their young.
