There were emotional scenes in the Auckland court as the jury retired to decide the fate of Tony Worrell.
The jury has now retired for the evening.
Worrell is accused of murdering newlywed Katie Powells and injuring another driver by crashing his car into them.
The murder accused sobbed in the dock today as a Judge gave a jury instructions before they began considering his fate.
As the judge told the jury that their verdict on Worrell should ignore any emotions they felt about him it was the accused who broke down.
Worrell faces six charges over his driving in June last year.
The Crown says he tried but failed to hit four cars on Lynwood Road in South Auckland before smashing into Brett Robinson's car badly injuring him and then slamming head on into Ms Powells’ car, killing her.
The crown says Worrell was drunk and suicidal when he crashed but he still knew what he was doing and that he was putting others at risk.
Worrell's defence denies he was suicidal and says he was suffering from such low blood sugar levels that he was unconscious when he crashed.
The judge told the jury that they had to decide what was in Worrell's mind when he crashed.
