A toenail being auctioned for charity on TradeMe attracted 25,347 views, but managed to extract just $61 from bidders when the auction closed tonight.

The proceeds were to be donated to the Hawera Salvation Army, to buy supplies for its food bank.

It was billed as a "good honest Kiwi Male nail" measuring 12mm long by 11mm wide -- "That's 132 sq mm prime real estate".

"Offered here for auction is your chance to own 1 only prime porcellus carnivarous keratin (middle toe nail) that has been carefully groomed for one year for you!"

Its former owner said he had worn through the ends of a few socks during the its cultivation but had still managed to get about wearing shoes.

"This article will make a perfect `off the foot' present for an arty friend for their next `off the wall project'," the seller said.

The sale prompted a huge number of questions and comments, mostly positive, although a couple voiced concerns about the potential to transfer athlete's foot.
