For our amateur athletes, the Olympic Games set the standard for success. Standing on the winner’s dais, holding a medal – that's the dream.

But in an Olympic year, it's nice to remember that there are other accomplishments that are also just as important.

A group of young gymnasts from Christchurch recently competed alongside the world's best in the United States.

They made it despite the odds. Their practice gym was ruined in the earthquakes – their training programme thrown into disarray.

But then gymnastics is all about determination, and these girls have it in abundance.
