Ie vote Labour and you can see our current $13.50 min wage reduced to around $10 value today. Sure, you will have more dollars in your pocket, but your income will have gone down with what you can buy.

The problems of so-called poverty today have never been about money, its education. till we look at how people on the same incomes live and succeed on just as low incomes and learn from it, we wont magically fix poverty.

One associated problem is Labours RMA which has created a housing shortage which has driven up prices and rentals.

Another problem is people now demand better housing and are not prepared to have even 'average' housing.

Eg earlier this year we had the central Auckland apartments covered by Campbell Live which were very basic, a small room for $40-50,000 right in the centre of Auckland. Kiwis wont use the, as they are too basic with their shared facilities so typically only foreign students will use. But add it up, the interest on the mortage of such a room is around $50 a week for central Auckland, but the so-called poverty could reduce their demands for better to use something as basic. There are choices that can be made, but people want handouts vs get off their own backsides to help themselves. If cant afford your rent, find another cheaper option by moving.

Can always apply for a green card for the USA. There they have their much higher min wages ... Oh wait, their min wage is $7.25 US or call it $9 NZ ... when ours is $13.50! Our min wage was in 2011 the 9th highest in 197 countries listed, and since then with the recession others higher than us have used devaluation and inflation to lower their real incomes so we are probably about 5th highest in the world.
