Police have arrested a 17-year-old who was identified in CCTV footage of the Manurewa Liquor Store arson.

A Fire Safety investigation revealed that the car had been deliberately set alight after it reversed into the Manurewa Liquor Store at Northcrest shopping centre just before 2am on Sunday morning.

Detective sergeant Malcolm Hassall of the Manurewa CIB says Counties Manukau Police are still investigating arson at the liquor store.

"Police have reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and have identified and located the person seen in that footage. Police have arrested this person for the theft of the car involved in the arson, however further enquiries are still being made as to whether this person was involved in the arson," said Mr  Hassall.

The youth appeared the Manukau District Court today facing two charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. One of the charges was to do with an unrelated incident.

He is due to reappear in the Manukau District Court on August 3.

Police are looking for at least two more people in connection with the liquor store incident.

"We are still looking for others involved and urge the public to come forward if they have any further information that may be of relevance. Police would particularly like to hear from any street workers that were working in the Northcrest Way area on Sunday evening," said Mr Hassall.

Counties Manukau Police urge members of the public who may have information in relation to this incident to call Crime Squad on 09 2611300 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

CCTV is a very useful tool for cracking crimes like this. It was a pity when there is absolutely no information in relating to the young farmer's shooting, if there only had been a CCTV nearby to track the cars going in to the road..
