Zion Wildlife Gardens' big cats appear to have a stay on their possible execution, but their future and that of the park remains uncertain.

The park's receivers PriceWaterhouseCoopers have dropped a legal bid asking for the 36 big cats to be removed from the property near Whangarei by February 3 or euthanised, ahead of a scheduled February hearing on their future.

The matter went to the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday where the receivers' lawyer Justin Toebes said he reserved the right to make another application.

He said the application was made after an offer to buy Zion Wildlife Gardens as a going concern, though whether the buyer wanted to keep the cats was unclear.

Any buyer who wants to run the park with the cats would need MAF approval.

Mr Toebes also made an application to confirm the receivers' right to enter the park.

Evgeny Orlov, the lawyer for the park's operator Patricia Busch, said the application about the cats and subsequent resiling from it was an abuse of process and said he would seek indemnity costs.

He said no other issues about the park should be decided until after the hearing about the cats.

Zion Wildlife Gardens became famous through the television series The Lion Man, featuring Ms Busch's son Craig.

The park subsequently got into financial trouble and there was a falling-out between Craig and Patricia Busch, which resulted in Craig Busch leaving the park in 2008 after an employment battle.

Zoo keeper Dalu Mncube was killed by one of the cats the following year.

why would anyone want to kill any of these animals?? the world is going crazy, and, why why why is craig not where he should be? - with the animals that only he knows best how to look after. Yes, some one was killed by a tiger at the park, anyone working with thes animals knows of the risks involved. Wild animals are unpredictable, horses are the same, look at the deaths involved with horse riding... Yes, the world is a cruel cruel place :-(

have to laugh at the idiocy of some of these comments.. "money doesn't solve everything" says debbie, "corporate worship of money" claims sizemik. yet what is the answer? according to edwine-anne and jan, the solution is for "wealthy people" to save the day and pitch in! the hypocrisy astounds me! other zoos don't want to take on animals who have been declawed (look it up) by the clown who calls himself 'the lion man', and why should they? they might be in financial trouble themselves. @Ricardo, PwC deals with businesses not customers. businesses comprise of people who are smart enough to get the real facts on a story and not believe the media bs.

Why should these incredible animals be at the mercy of man. They didn't, choose to be there so money can be made off them. So much for their protecters. Where are they? What about Arana Park and places like that. Can,t they take them? They don,t deserve to die!!

I suspect Rabobank AND PWC have weighed up the 'embarrassment' of being quoted in the press. Customers would leave both in droves if any of those animals were put down for corporate greed by the small minded bean counters.

NZ zoos can't take these cats in because they are of doubtful genetic integrity - so-called "rare" white tigers and lions are the result of INBREEDING.

It's just another example of the Corporate worship of money . . . whatever saves you $$$$$$ . . . comes ahead of EVERYTHING. Money lovers make the whole world sick.

agree with debbie and edwina -anne. the kingston flyer was in trouble with threats of breaking it up, some one eventually brought it and on the news the other night it showed that the area was picking up and going well. I know live cats are different but yes, the rich people out there buy the park., and all of us who don't want the cats put down could each contribute say $100 to help the park feed the cats, thats less than a $1 a day.
