Deserving an Oscar for the beard alone, Ben Affleck stars in and directs Argo.
The film is based on the very true story of the “Canadian caper”, where the CIA and Canada jointly launched a mission to help bring out six American hostages trapped in Tehran.
It’s the plan they executed which makes this story so incredible. Affleck's CIA agent Tony Mendez goes in pretending he's a Hollywood film producer, intent on making his next sci-fi feature in Iran. The hostages would be his film crew.
Affleck ratchets up the tension from his directors chair from the get-go and coupled with a great script rammed with memorable one liners and performances, it’s easy to see it why it is an Oscar favourite and audiences everywhere will love it.
I am a big fan of Ben Affleck in the director's chair, and this is his best outing yet. He manages to take a riveting real life global drama and turn it into an incredibly compelling and thrilling story for the big screen, gathering around him such an excellent cast to help him get there.
Definitive Oscar bait for sure. Four and a half stars
