Family dinner costs more this Christmas
Mothers are more likely to cook the festive meal, says Stats NZ
Expect to fork out up to $12 more for the family Christmas dinner this year compared to costs a decade ago, new figures show.
A barbecue dinner for four including steak, chicken, salad, pavlova and nibbles costs about $65 compared to about $54 in 2002, according to Statistics New Zealand.
A more traditional meal of lamb, chicken, seasonal vegetables, pavlova and nibbles costs $67, compared to $55 a decade earlier.
Products that had the highest price increase were steak, lamb, chicken, salted peanuts and sparkling wine while the price of strawberries and capsicums declined.
Statistics New Zealand prices manager, Chris Pike, says mothers are more likely to cook the festive meal as women spend one hour and two minutes on average in the kitchen each day - 34 minutes more than men.
"Most of us will be busy, but the person with the biggest job over the holidays will no doubt be Santa, who will have about 603,730 New Zealand children aged under 10 to visit on Christmas Eve," Mr Pike said.
Based on figures over the past decade, on average 122 babies are born between December 25 and 27 and 27 couples get married.
Average cost of a Christmas dinner for a family of four:
- Barbecue: steak, chicken, salad, pavlova and nibbles - $64.74 ($53.65 in 2002)
- Traditional: lamb, chicken, seasonal vegetables, pavlova and nibbles - $67.31 ($54.60 in 2002)
Price comparison for products in 2002 compared to this year:
- Salted peanuts (250g) - $2.25 to $3.92
- Leg of lamb - $10.99 to $14.94 per kilo
- Whole chicken - $6.64 to $8.91
- Potatoes - no change
- Sparkling wine - $10.56 to $11.82
- Capsicums (200g) - $2.27 to $2.12
- Strawberries (550g) - $8.72 to $7.45
