Wellington's Embassy Theatre is one of four cinemas in the world hosting a sneak peek of the second Hobbit film of the trilogy - The Desolation of Smaug - next month for fans.

While director Sir Peter Jackson is at his beloved Embassy - scene of previous Hobbit and Lord of the Rings world premieres - cast members will be in New York, Los Angeles and London cinemas for the satellite-linked event on November 5 (NZ time).

Jackson and cast members - including Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Andy Serkis and James Nesbitt - will take part in a live question and answer session.

The footage will also screen in nine other cinemas around the world and be livestreamed on YouTube, according to the film's official website.

On his Facebook page, Jackson promises "a few special surprises".

"We're working around the clock [on post-production] at the moment, so I'm not going to get a lot of sleep between then and now, but I am looking forward to this," he said.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in New Zealand on December 12.
