DJ and rave pioneer Scott Hardkiss has died, aged 43.

The San Francisco, California native, real name Scott Friedel, founded techno-house trio the Hardkiss Brothers in the 1990s and quickly became an early staple of US dance culture.

He moved to New York and recorded mixtapes under the name God Within, working with Sir Elton John and the Flaming Lips among others.

His 1997 Essential Mix is considered a must-have among house music aficionados.

He released his solo debut, Technicoler Dreamer, in 2009.

Hardkiss suffered from a degenerative eye disorder, known as Keratoconus, and underwent eye transplant surgery to restore vision in his left eye in 2011.

Details of his death have not been disclosed.
