Royal fetus account a hit on Twitter

A spoof profile of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's unborn baby has gained almost 8000 followers on Twitter.

The royal couple announced their pregnancy after Catherine was forced into a London hospital with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe type of morning sickness.

Parody Twitter profiles quickly appeared, including the popular @royalfetus account, which purported to be tweeting from Ms Middleton's womb and which, as of 3pm (NZT), had 7851 followers.

"I may not have bones yet but I'm already more important than everyone reading this," it tweeted.

University of Melbourne's pop culture expert Dr Lauren Rosewarne said social media will offer a subversive alternative to mainstream news coverage of the pregnancy over the next eight months.

"Sure our mainstream media is going to be dominated by the conservative take on the story - the blah blah blah story," she said.

"Social media allows a counter narrative and that's where you get the fetus stuff."

Of course there were many genuine tweets about the baby too.

Possible names were a popular topic of conversation, with Diana seemingly everyone's favoured moniker in cyberspace.

Prime Minister John Key tweeted his congratulations on behalf of the Kiwi nation and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard congratulated the royal couple.
