Steamy sex scene lands TV1 in hot water

Monday 3 May 2010 2:31 p.m.

A sex scene from the New Zealand film The Vinter's Luck shown during TV1's Close Up has been found to breach broadcasting standards.

The scene showed the two main characters passionately kissing, with a man proceeding to put his head under a woman's dress.

The woman in the scene was played by New Zealand actor Keisha Castle-Hughes who reached fame for her Oscar nominated portrayal in Whale Rider.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) ruled in favour of the complainant who said the scene left little to the imagination and was unsuitable for the time slot.

Television New Zealand (TVNZ) defended showing the scene saying that while some sexual activity was shown there was no nudity and no explanation of what was going on in the scene.

A second complaint about the use of objectionable language by a Close Up reporter in the same segment was not upheld.

The reporter had called the film "a good old Kiwi film about drinking and rooting".

The BSA has made no orders in relation to the complaint but said in a statement that the decision should remind broadcasters to exercise care when broadcasting sexual material during the parental guidance time-slot.
