Scientists drill into Antarctic ice

Friday 22 Nov 2013 8:49 a.m.

Scientists from New Zealand and the United States are busy in Antarctica right now carrying out a range of experiments focusing on climate change.

3 News reporter Hamish Clark has spent the week on the ice checking out what they've been up to.

Ice in the Ross Sea has been observed extending further out towards New Zealand than usual, considering climate change, so scientists have been trying to work out why.

It's still melting from the bottom up though, despite its 1000m thickness in some places.

Hamish has also been taking a look at historic items left in huts up to 100 years old.

Watch the video for more on what scientists are finding out.
