Sir Peter Jackson, Martin Freeman, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis and Richard Armitage thrilled fans at a Tokyo screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the film’s first since its New Zealand premiere last week.

Hordes of Japanese fans, some dressed in character, waited for hours to meet the stars of the film at Toho Cinema, Roppongi Hills, Tokyo.

“We had a fantastic premiere the other day in Wellington, which we thought couldn’t be topped, but Tokyo is giving it a very good run for its money,” Freeman exclaimed to the fans.

“Tokyo’s enthusiasm really is unparalleled; I love bringing films here, it’s my third time,” added Wood.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens  in cinemas worldwide December 14.
