One look at today’s trending topics on Twitter and you may have thought
Apple had diversified into women’s sanitary products.
The word “iTampon” is currently sitting at the top of trending topics,
as online users join in a worldwide joke over Steve Jobs' latest creation the
Apple iPad.
Twitter users were quick to poke fun at the name, with tweets
including:
Annie_Bytch: “lol
realii....iTampon for ur heaviest downloads lmfaooo”
alisonduffy93:
“iTampon..love it! Have to admit, first thing I thought of when I heard about
the iPad..for a bunch of geniuses, Apple aren’t very smart :P”
Strangely enough, American comedy series Mad TV mention an
"iPad" in a 2007 skit that originally intended to mock the old iPod
ads.
Mr Jobs was obviously unaware of the
parody when he unveiled the new iPad this morning, but in as little as two
hours “iTampon” had emerged on Twitter.
The iPad is currently retailing at
$US499, a much lower price than the $US1,000 that some analysts predicted.
Tablet style computers have existed for
over a decade, but have often struggled in popularity.
Mr Jobs says Apple will have to work
hard to convince customers of the benefits of an iPad over a smart phone or
laptop.
It seems he may now also have to
convince customers of the reasoning behind the product's comical name choice.
