Bus drives wrong way over Harbour Bridge
Auckland commuters had a lucky escape after a bus drove on the wrong side of the road on the Harbour Bridge this afternoon.
Police say the driver became "confused" and was heading north in the southbound lane.
Passenger Amanda Preston tweeted about the incident, saying the driver did not seem to know he was doing something wrong.
"Everyone jumped up and started yelling at him to stop the bus and called the police. Some guys got off the bus.
"He kind pulled into the Shelley Beach Rd exit, and I thought he had just accidentally taken the wrong off ramp, and was just trying to get back onto the motorway. Turns out he was using it so that he had space to swing the bus around.
"[A] truck stopped in front of us so he couldn't keep driving. Police arrived, backed the bus off the bridge, dropped us in the city".
Ms Preston says the man is a regular driver on the route.
The bus did not get far before the embarrassed driver realised and stopped, Inspector Andy Brill of police northern communications says.
"I think he realised there was nothing he could do about it," he told NZ Newswire.
Police attending the scene say no one was hurt during the incident. Passengers are waiting for a replacement bus.
