Canterbury teachers to decide on strike action today

Wednesday 5 Dec 2012 8:46 a.m.

By 3 News online staff

Teachers in Canterbury will today consider whether to take industrial action over their concerns about the Government's plans to restructure education in the region.

New Zealand's largest education union, the NZEI, says hundreds are expected to turn out at a meeting in Christchurch and they are determined to send a message to the government about reforms they say could be rolled out nationwide.

“There is a very high level of anger among the educating workforce down in Christchurch,” NZEI president Ian Leckie told Firstline this morning.

“They want the people of Christchurch and themselves to be listened to.”

Mr Leckie says the teachers’ union has not yet decided on strike action, but the entire Canterbury teaching workforce coming together is momentous.

“There are decisions being made that are excluding teachers, schools and their community’s voices and ultimately what we’re seeing in Christchurch is radical change on a large scale,” says Mr Leckie.

He says the region’s entire education workforce will attend the meeting today.
