Caution urged after Waikato road death

Friday 23 Nov 2012 1:01 p.m.

Police are urging drivers to stick to basics on Waikato roads after a crash claimed the life of a teenager on Thursday.

A 17-year-old-woman, a front seat passenger in a Mazda Lantis, died after being thrown from the car after the 18-year-old driver failed to negotiate a bend and hit a raised farm driveway on Duck Road, Rotokauri, west of Hamilton.

The driver was taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries, while an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old woman seated in the back of the car were unhurt but treated for shock.

Waikato District road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman says police are investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors.

The death brought Waikato's road toll to the year to 40 and Insp Tooman says drivers need to exercise care to keep the toll from getting any higher.

"We all need to adhere to the basics, 100km/h is a limit not a target and the throttle and the bottle don't mix," he said.

"If you are going out drinking make arrangements before you head off in relation to how you will get home because drinking and driving is not an option."

Insp Tooman says some people were at the scene before emergency services and asked anyone who hasn't already spoken to police to call them.
