Internet mogul Kim Dotcom invited the public to enjoy free ice-cream at a store on Auckland’s Queen St today.

The promotional event was organised ahead of the launch of his new file-locker website.

The new Mega service, seen as the successor to the popular file sharing site Megaupload, will be launched on Sunday to coincide with the first anniversary of the dramatic raid on Dotcom's Coatesville mansion.

Dotcom, in a tweet, has promised an "epic" party at his mansion to mark the launch of the new website.

Dotcom and his three co-accused are still awaiting a court hearing to determine whether they will be extradited to the United States to face copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering charges related to the Megaupload site.

The extradition hearing, which has been delayed several times, is expected to take four weeks and is set down for August.

Dotcom was greeted by more than 100 people gathered on the footpath outside Giapo’s Queen St store this afternoon.

After shaking hands with the crowd, Dotcom announced that “golden tickets” granting access to the new website’s launch party were to be found at the bottom of 10 of the ice-cream tubs being given away. The ice-cream on offer was “Mega-flavoured”.

Trish Mason, 27, was one of those who found a ticket. An avowed Dotcom fan, she described him as a “genius”, and said she would definitely be attending the launch party.

“I did [use Megaupload] and I will use Mega,” she said.
