Dunedin 'chilly bin riders' to appear in court
By Elizabeth Hayes
Three young men will appear in Dunedin Court later this week, after being caught riding a chilly bin down the steepest street in New Zealand.
The chilly bin was towed behind a car through the Octagon and down the famous Baldwin St, horrifying police and bringing back disturbing memories for locals.
“They took the extension chord and put it round the handle, and placed the other end on the tow bar of the car, then just dragged it around the Octagon,” says Sergeant Tania Baron of Dunedin police.
The site attracts hundreds of tourists each day, as well as daredevils at night. Eight years ago, 19-year-old student Anna North was killed when she rode a wheelie bin down the hill and smashed head-first into a trailer.
“The potential for serious injury, if not death, is definitely there. I think people just don’t consider what could go wrong really,” says Ms Baron.
After being towed down Baldwin St, the trio then poured fuel on the ground, lit it, and rode through the fire on the chilly bin lid.
Police soon caught up with the group, and they were charged for disorderly behaviour and dangerous driving.
They will appear in court on Thursday.
