Father, daughter living as husband and wife
A father and daughter were living as husband and wife
A father and daughter who lived as husband and wife and had a child together have been sentenced on incest charges.
The 32-year-old man and 18-year-old woman, who said she was in love with her father, both pleaded guilty when they appeared in court in June.
During sentencing at Dunedin District Court on Tuesday, Judge Stephen O'Driscoll told the pair: "This must stop. These sort of relationships do not last and are fraught with difficulties," the Otago Daily Times reports.
The daughter was sentenced to 12 months' supervision, with a condition that she undertake counselling or treatment as directed.
The father was convicted and sentenced to 300 hours' community work and 12 months' supervision. He was also ordered to complete a domestic violence programme and can't be in the company of his daughter unless another approved adult is present.
Psychiatric and psychological reports indicated the pair had genetic sexual attraction, which sometimes happened between family members reunited after a long separation, the court was told.
The man had had little to do with his daughter until she turned 16.
Judge O'Driscoll said the man was 13 when he and his 30-year-old foster mother started a sexual relationship and was 14 when the daughter was born.
Counsel Bernadette Farnham, for the woman, said both offenders had "a mutual background of abuse and neglect".
The pair, who lived together for about two years, had been in a sexual relationship since August 2010, which resulted in the birth of a child.
