Dozens of residents and volunteers have rallied in Haast to search for the body of a Canadian man presumed dead after the wreckage of his vehicle was discovered last week.

Connor Hayes, 25, and his girlfriend Joanna Lam, 24, were reported missing after Ms Lam failed to show up for work on Monday. Her body was discovered on Friday on a beach north of Haast.

It is believed the pair were swept off the West Coast road by a slip. The wreckage of their van was found strewn along the riverbed.

Police are optimistic about finding Mr Hayes' body, and Senior Constable Robin Manera told Fairfax the search team today includes jetboats, dogs and people on horseback.

"I did a ring around yesterday and they [locals and volunteers] dropped everything and came in," he says. "That's the way it works around here."

A spokesman for the families of Mr Hayes and Ms Lam said they hoped the discovery of their bodies would bring closure to their loved ones.
