A South African woman who tried smuggle two large ostrich eggs into New Zealand has been fined.

The eggs, weighing 1.5kg each, were found wrapped in newspaper inside the woman's luggage at Auckland International Airport by biosecurity officials last week.

The passenger was fined $400.

Ministry for Primary Industries operational support co-ordinator, Steve Gay, says the eggs posed a high biosecurity risk as they could have been carrying a disease or may have been used for breeding.

"It beggars belief that the passenger could possibly forget to declare something so obvious in size and so risky for our primary sector and environment," he said.
