A motorcyclist has been killed in a collision with a car near Richmond, in the Nelson region.

The 56-year-old, from Takaka, was heading towards Motueka on a Harley Davidson motorcycle around 5.30pm yesterday when a car driven by an 80-year-old man collided with him at an intersection on State Highway 60 at Appleby. The elderly man was not injured, Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy of Nelson police said.

There was no indication of speeding, he said.

The motorcyclist's family was due to identify him today and serious crash investigators were trying to determine the cause of the accident.
