Northland fire brought under control

Thursday 24 Jan 2013 12:17 p.m.

Fire crews in Northland are making good progress controlling a massive fire that has spread across more than 200 hectares of bush.

The fire, near Kellys Bay Road in Pouto on the Kaipara Harbour, broke out about 9.30am on Tuesday.

About 80 firefighters from around the Northland region are on the ground on Thursday, while helicopters are again being used to strengthen the fire break.

Department of Conservation spokesman David Mules says calm conditions are providing crews with an opportunity to get the fire under control.

"Things are looking pretty good really, we had a nice calm night and the perimeter of the fire remained intact, so it didn't spread any further," Mr Mules told NZ Newswire.

There is no immediate threat to nearby properties from the fire.

Ground crews will still have several more days work ahead of them, even in the best scenario.

"This is the third day in the field for many of them, they're getting pretty tired," Mr Mules said.

The blaze is being treated as suspicious.
