Staff at 628 schools around the country were overpaid, underpaid or not paid at all in the latest teacher pay round.

Steven Joyce, the cabinet minister in charge of fixing the Novopay system, says 521 were overpaid, 589 were underpaid and 552 weren't paid.

Errors affected 2.2 percent of staff.

"All complaints received are either currently being resolved or have been resolved," he said in his latest update on Friday.

"Staff were paid a total $160.3 million."

Mr Joyce says Talent2, the company that supplies Novopay, plans to release the first of three software upgrades this weekend.

The others will be released in March and April.

He says he expects a draft technical report on the system next week.

"I have asked the review team to evaluate the software remediation plan to give us an indication whether that will address the identified issues with the system," he said.

A ministerial inquiry is investigating all aspects of the error-ridden system, which has caused strife since it was rolled out in August.
