Thousands of people made the most of the sun and the public holiday in Waitangi today.

Crowds gathered to watch hundreds of waka paddlers take to the water in a display featuring the country’s biggest ceremonial waka.

Hundreds took part in a hikoi against domestic violence, which made its way across the Waitangi Bridge and up to the main Treaty Ground.

There was also an attempt to break the world record for biggest haka to raise awareness for youth suicide prevention.

The Defence Force also played a major role in the celebrations, with performances by the Navy band followed by a 21-gun salute.

The Air Force’s aerobatic team, the Red Checkers, then put on an impressive display over the Treaty Grounds.

The five E model CT4 aircraft performed a variety of manoeuvres including “the heart” and “the swan”, twisting and diving in the perfect flying conditions.
