Police look for man who tried to grab girl

Tuesday 4 Dec 2012 2:07 p.m.

By Sarah Robson

Invercargill police are still looking for a man driving a white van who tried to abduct a 17-year-old girl on a city street.

The girl was approached by a man, in his 50s or 60s, with grey or silver hair, as she was walking along a street on Sunday morning.

The man tried to get her into his van, which has tinted windows, but she managed to run off.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bowman says there have been previous incidents over the last month where the man has approached children in his van and talked to them with the window down.

The incident on Sunday was the first time he's got out of the van and tried to grab somebody, "which is obviously a real concern to us," Det Sen Sgt Bowman said.

He said police are still waiting to interview the girl, who's traumatised by the incident, but they hope to speak to her this week.

Members of the public are being asked to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour.

"We've had a number of calls from people just concerned about behaviour of persons or persons from vehicles, which is exactly what we're after," Det Sen Sgt Bowman said.

However, police are yet to get any definite information in relation to the van.

Det Sen Sgt Bowman said members of the public shouldn't confront the man and should instead call police and "leave it up to us to speak to him".
