Oscar the three-legged dairy thief has been let off the hook after nearly a week in the pound.

Oscar rose to fame last week, after a CCTV security video of him pinching a dog roll from an Invercargill dairy went viral.

He wound up behind bars at the local pound, when dairy owners caught him trying to do it again.

Today Oscar was finally re-united with his owner, who had been on holiday in Stewart Island.

His owner has asked to remain anonymous but Invercargill City Council Animal Control Officer Stephen Dawson says Oscar was delighted to be going home.

“He was happy enough, bouncing around his three legs,” he said.

But Oscar’s days of robbing local dairies are over – the owner has promised to take him back to the countryside, where he is used to living.
