Three former MPs who retired at the last election have received Queen's Service Orders in the New Year's Honours.

Former Labour MP George Hawkins, former National MP Wayne Mapp and former ACT Party leader Rodney Hide have been honoured for services as Members of Parliament.

Mr Hawkins represented the Manurewa electorate in parliament from the 1990 election until 2011.

During his time in Government, he held several ministerial portfolios, including police, Internal Affairs, Civil Defence and Veterans' Affairs.

Since retiring, the former teacher and Papakura mayor has returned to local body politics, serving on Auckland Council's Manurewa Local Board.

Dr Mapp held the North Shore seat for National from 1996, and became a minister for the first time when National won the 2008 election, taking the defence and research, science and technology portfolios.

He was appointed to the Law Commission earlier this year.

Mr Hide also entered Parliament in 1996, and held the Epsom seat for ACT until last year, when he resigned from the leadership, which he had held since 2004, after a successful challenge from former National leader Don Brash.

Mr Hide remained in Parliament for several months until the election, when he stepped down.

After National won the 2008 election, Mr Hide became a minister outside of Cabinet, taking on the local government portfolio which saw him spearhead the Auckland Council amalgamation, along with the regulatory reform and associate commerce portfolios.
