Nick Smith: This is your life

Wednesday 21 Mar 2012 6:01 p.m.

Nick Smith entered Parliament in 1990 aged just 25, and has never been far from controversy.

After being elevated to Minister of Conservation, he became part of a gang of young National MPs including Bill English - labelled the “Brat Pack” – and dabbled in Parliamentary rugby.

His staunch representation of Nelson residents came with its risks, and there were court cases, including one where he was found guilty of contempt of court.

After becoming Don Brash’s deputy in 2003, he took stress leave after a meltdown and lost the position after just 19 days.

Before Nick Smith leaves for the back benches, Patrick Gower reflects on what was, at times, a stellar career.
