Parliament has passed Treaty of Waitangi settlement bills which give a total of $27 million to two iwi.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says Ngati Whatua Orakei's "hospitality and graciousness" allowed Auckland to be founded and the iwi was left virtually landless in return.
The settlement gives its members $18m and returns the culturally significant Purewa Creek conservation area.
The second bill gives Ngati Manuhiri $9m and returns six culturally significant sites including land on Little Barrier Island.
Mr Finlayson says Ngati Manuhiri was also left virtually landless by the Crown's actions which had devastating consequences for the iwi.
Parliament held an unusual Thursday morning sitting to pass the bills.
