A Kane Williamson century has steered Northern Districts to their first win of the Plunket Shield cricket season.

Williamson scored an unbeaten 121 in the visitors' second innings against Wellington on Thursday as ND chased down the target of 194 with six wickets to spare.

It was the second big knock by a member of Northern's Black Caps contingent during the match at Karori Park, after pace bowler Tim Southee smashed 156 on the opening day.

Both Williamson and Southee will join the Black Caps in South Africa for the two-Test series in January.

Wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi, who becomes eligible for New Zealand in mid-January, was the star performer for Wellington.

The Dannevirke-born former Australian representative scored two centuries and also took eight catches, six of them in ND's first innings.

Despite their win, the Knights remain bottom of the table, while the Firebirds are fourth.

In Dunedin, the match between Otago and Central Districts meandered to a draw after the home side declared their second innings at 227-4 at tea.

With Otago's lead at 225, the sides agreed to a halt in proceedings at University Oval.

CD, for whom veteran Mathew Sinclair scored 142, his 36th first-class century, remain top of the table, while Otago are second.

Northern Districts 403-8 dec (T Southee 156; J Patel 3-102) and 196-4 (K Williamson 121no) beat Wellington 206 (L Ronchi 113; Southee 5-69, B Arnel 3-62) and 390 (Ronchi 108, S Kuggeleijn 83) by six wickets.

Otago 427 (A Redmond 63, R ten Doeschate 118, S Wells 63, M Craig 63, N Wagner 68; A Patel 4-86) and 227-4 dec (Wagner 65, ten Doeschate 54no) drew with Central Districts 449 (J How 64, Carl Cachopa 55, M Sinclair 142; Wagner 4-103).
