New Zealand cyclist Cath Cheatley will be transferred to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital after crashing in the round-the-mountain road race in Taranaki.

Cheatley crashed just before the halfway mark of the 150km race around Mt Taranaki on Saturday, out of cell phone range at Te Kiri.

Race organiser Robert Coe says Cheatley's husband Dayle told him the national women's road champion had suffered multiple hip fractures.

She was taken by ambulance to Taranaki Base Hospital, where she is in a stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said on Monday.

Cheatley will be transferred to Middlemore Hospital later on Wednesday.

Coe says Cheatley was leading a chasing bunch when the crash happened after "a touch of wheels".

"She was just flying, she was floating," he said.

The United States-based pro-race rider was on the comeback trail after breaking two bones in her pelvis after crashing during a criterium in Minnesota in June.

It's expected Cheatley's recovery will take several months.
